Syllabus, classroom requirements, policies and procedures, icebreakers, and community building activities are all covered. Students write a polished anecdote and create a corresponding mandala that symbolizes them in some way. This first week unit helps students get to know one another, gives the teacher an opportunity to collect a writing sample and assess classroom dynamics and work ethic.
